Habitat for Humanity China: Tai O Build

Tao build

The first phase of a Habitat for Humanity home restoration initiative in Hong Kong was recently launched with a five-day volunteer build from June 9th to 13th. A total of 68 volunteers from Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, Ogier law firm, China Resources, China Light and Power, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology completed the restoration of stilt houses for four elderly families in a fishing village in Tai O on the southwest coast of Lantau Island.

The launch event has helped raise public awareness of the plight of the Tai O stilt houses and its residents, in order to help revitalize the neighborhood, as well as conserve the natural habitat and preserve the cultural and heritage of Tai O.

Habitat for Humanity China has received over $350,000 HKD for the Tai O project so far. The three-phase restoration project aims to help 100 families to repair and restore their stilt houses by 2013. The goal is to raise of $1.5 to 2 million HKD in Hong Kong to support this volunteer initiative.  The next volunteer build at Tai O is scheduled for August 14th to 17th.
