Locked Passion of a Free Spirit

This thoroughly engaging memoir tells the story of Fabiola Pon, an incurably shy Chinese girl who was born and raised in South Africa, where she was surrounded by ethnic and racial segregation.
At the age of twenty-three, restless, disillusioned and unhappy with her life, Ms. Pon left South Africa in search of adventure, and for the next five years she lived the life of a vagrant. Driven by an insatiable wanderlust, she roamed from yacht to yacht, beach to beach, bar to bar, sexual encounter to sexual encounter, working wherever and whenever she could. She hitchhiked through Europe, sailed the high seas, explored the United States, and braved South America.

Sharing the journey was a fiery Spanish South African girl with whom Fabiola developed a close and enduring friendship. Together the two young women lived life for the moment, fearless, irrepressible, and sometimes uncontrollable.

In spite of her newfound friendship, Fabiola couldn't shrug off the loneliness and desolation that stalked her. In her reckless search for love and understanding, she often found herself drawn to older men, all of them domineering, some of them aggressive and abusive. At times, attraction turned to obsession, leading her into a downward spiral of heartache and despair.

Thanks to her incredible strength of will and an unwavering spirit she ultimately put her destructive patterns behind her. In the end she emerged a more courageous and enlightened woman, liberated at last from the ethnic inhibitions that bound her for far too long.
